The story of the Bounty Bowling Tournament is really a story of a determined effort on the part of the Norfolk Island Bowling Club to establish an annual competition on an International or Commonwealth level, with the particular view of attracting teams from overseas. In 1962 President Danny Lusk and his committee organised the first Bounty Tournament, welcoming a contingent of New Zealand bowlers as well as a team from Sydney Australia led by the President of the Royal NSW Bowling Association. The tournament was away to a flying start. Over the years interest in the Tournament, which usually commences on the first Monday in May each year, has grown and with improved greens and other facilities, the success of this annual event seems assured. A strikingly good replica of the “Bounty”, remembered more perhaps by the Mutiny of 1789, made in solid silver is the trophy competed for and the individual names of players in winning teams are inscribed on a plaque fixed to the trophy stand. In the past 54 years the “Bounty” has been won by teams from the Royal NSW Bowling Association, Australia, New Zealand, Queensland and of course, Norfolk Island. Originally just men’s fours, the Bounty format is now open, so teams can be men, women, or mixed. And the second week of bowls for mixed teams has been added.
Heritage Events, a local entity, is a welcome major sponsor this year and we look forward to a long-continuing association with them.
